Maandag moest ik werken op een ‘feestje’ een get together on monday van een bekende van m’n werk. Ik was al gewaarschuwd voor de hoeveelheid auto’s die de man bezat en voor de grootheid van zijn huis, maar serieus, dit verzin je gewoon niet.
De gasten werden ontvangen in de garage A.K.A. showroom. Daar stonden de grote Engelse en Amerikaanse klassiekers en (natuurlijk) de Bugatti Veyron, de Mercedes McLaren, de Maybach.. lieve meisjes, ik kan me heel goed voorstellen dat jullie dit helemaal niks zegt, maar met een aan auto’s verslingerde familie zoals die van mij, wordt je dat zelf vanzelf ook wel. Ik stond in ieder geval de eerste tien minuten met m’n mond wagenwijd open en ik had het veel te druk met kwijlen om dat door te hebben.
De gasten druppelden binnen, het authentieke draaiorgel (meer dan honderd jaar oud) werd aan het werk gezet, de champagne vloeide (natuurlijk) en de gasten stonden, gelukkig, óok met grote ogen naar de auto’s te kijken. Ben ik dus niet de enige die een beetje licht in het hoofd werd bij het zien van al die auto’s.
De gastenlijst was een mix van Amsterdam Oud-Zuid en grote bazen van verzekeringsmaatschappijen met hun vrouwen. Oh en een ontzettend leuke, Italiaanse, op mannenvallende danser die meedoet aan So You Think You Can Dance.
Na de champagne vertrokken de gasten naar het huis van Meneer X. Meneer X, de eigenaar van dit alles, wil best met zijn volledige naam op internet, zolang ik zijn adres gegevens niet vermeld. Maar toch, ik houd het liever bij Meneer X, dat zegt mijn gevoel.
Goed het huis van Meneer X was natuurlijk net zo moeilijk te vinden op dat immens grote terrein als dat het indrukwekkend was. Want indrukwekkend was het. Zo ook de kelder. Een typisch Zuid Europese wijnkelder. En daar zaten de gasten, aan een lange bourgondischetafel. Wij serveerden de gerechtjes en zorgden dat de glazen met wijn (van honderden euro’s per fles) gevuld waren.
Aan het eind van de avond was er een grote emmer vol met wijn uit glazen die niet gedronken was. Met pijn in m’n hart keek ik ernaar. Ik zag daar dus een Chanel 2.55 tas liggen. Man wat zonde. Maar daar mocht ik dus niet aan denken. Zelf mochten we ook een flesje opentrekken en Meneer X zou wel een chauffeur regelen die mij in m’n eigen auto thuis zou brengen. Maar goed, ik ben nog steeds een klein beetje op m’n alcoholdieet (bevalt eigenlijk best goed) en ik dronk dus netjes een half glaasje wit en een klein druppeltje rood, ik propte er nog twee Van Dobben kroketten in en ik vond mezelf wel weer klaar om achter het stuur te duiken.
Het was niet in de laatste plaats een bijzondere avond, om niet in al te veel krachttermen – die ik graag zou willen gebruiken – te vervallen.
