Voordat ik begon met m’n scriptie wist ik absoluut niet wat me te wachten zou komen te staan. Moest ik zenuwachtig zijn, werd dit moeilijk, zou het uiteindelijk meevallen? Nou het werd dus moeilijk.
M’n onderwerp had ik vrij snel bedacht. Ik wilde iets met afslankproducten en autoriteitsargumentatie. En gezien mijn voorliefde voor foute roddel en achterklap kom je dan al snel bij beroemdheden uit. Een hoofdvraag formuleren was een heel ander verhaal, die werd iedere week anders, en vond zijn uiteindelijke formulering pas op deadline-dag.
Het maken van m’n scriptie ging alles behalve van een leiendakje. Mijn eerste probleem was dat ik überhaupt geen voorbeelden kon vinden van beroemheden die afslankmiddelen aanprezen. Toen ik die eenmaal gevonden had was ik helemaal niet blij met de advertenties die ik moest gaan analyseren, wat moest ik hier in godsnaam mee. Maar ik geloofde er toen nog in dat het uiteindelijk allemaal wel goed zou komen, dus ik schreef vrolijk verder en toen ik de advertenties moest gaan analyseren deed ik eigenlijk zomaar wat.
Begin mei leverde ik mijn conceptversie in, een week later, op elf mei, de dag voor mijn 21ste verjaardag had ik een gesprek met mijn scriptiebegeleidster, mevrouw Snoeck Henkemans. Toen ik haar kamertje inliep voelde het als een moeilijk doktersgesprek, toen ik het kamertje verliet had ik het gevoel dat de dokter mij zojuist verteld had dat ik nog maar een paar maanden te leven had.
Mijn scriptie was op z’n zachtst gezegd niet zo goed, het was onsamenhangend, niet wetenschappelijk en bovendien in slecht Nederlands geschreven. Een half uurtje heb ik ’s avonds gehuild, om vervolgens de volgende de dag mijn verjaardag dubbel en dwars keihard te vieren. De dag erna zat ik braaf om negen uur met mijn laptop en al mijn verzamelde informatie aan tafel. Ik opende een nieuw worddocument en ben volledig opnieuw begonnen.
In twee weken schreef ik een compleet nieuwe scriptie, niet zonder de nodige stress natuurlijk, toen m’n scriptie naar mijn idee klaar was stuurde ik hem naar m’n studievriendinnetjes Linda, Laura en Nathalie die er heel lief naar hebben gekeken en aanwijzingen hebben gegeven. Nathalie maakte op dat moment een rondreis door Noord Amerika maar wist toch zoveel aanwijzingen te geven met wijzigingen bijhouden in word, dat ik na mijn laatste pagina van mijn scriptie nog tien bladen met aanwijzingen had. Goed op dat moment leek het net alsof mijn scriptie weer net zo’n prutje was als de eerste keer, maar ergens wist ik ook wel dat ik me daar gewoon niks van aan moest trekken en goed naar Nathalie moest luisteren.
Eind mei leverde ik m’n scriptie weer in en toen kon het wachten beginnen. 17 juni zou ik de uitslag te horen krijgen en eerder verwachtte ik ook geen mailtje. Maar die kwam er wel, op de vijftiende al. Ik zat nietsvermoedend in de tuin een kopje thee te drinken voordat ik naar mijn werk ging, toen ik ineens het geluid van een nieuwe mail uit mijn telefoon hoorde komen. Ik opende mijn mail, zag tot mijn schrik een mail van mevrouw Snoeck Henkemans staan, in kleine lettertjes zag ik een 6 en toen belandde ik in een soort van roes, met als gevolg ik verwijderde de mail. Toen ik nog eens wilde kijken, stond daar nou echt een 6? Was de mail verdwenen en nergens meer te vinden. Uiteindelijk heb ik mijn laptop opgestart en stond de mail bij mijn verwijderde items, ik had inderdaad een 6! Ik ben serieus nog nooit zo blij geweest met een 6.
Goed nu zijn jullie vast benieuwd naar mijn uiteindelijke hoofdvraag en conclusie, wees gerust ik mag niet te lang spreken dus ik houd het kort..
Mijn hoofdvraag was uiteindelijk:
Op welke manier wordt er in online advertenties voor afslankproducten strategisch gemanoeuvreerd met beroemdheden als autoriteit en gebeurt dit op een redelijke manier?
Het antwoord op die vraag kort samengevat:
– Beroemdheden proberen zichzelf te vereenzelvigen met de lezer
– Beroemdheden delen graag hun succesverhaal om de lezer te overtuigen
– Beroemdheden kunnen ook een dubbelrol op zich nemen, dat zij niet alleen gebruikerservaring hebben, maar ook die van deskundige (dit deed een beroemde fitness instructrice)
– In iedere tekst worden alleen de positieve gevolgen van de producten genoemd, zij laten de wenselijke aspecten naar voren komen en de negatieve laten zij achterwege.
Iedereen zegt nu natuurlijk ‘Oh Annemerel je hebt het helemaal zelf gedaan’ maar daar denk ik toch echt anders over. Ik wil allereerst mijn scriptiebegeleidster bedanken, want dat gesprek op elf mei was dan misschien wel niet zo leuk, het heeft me wel wakker geschud en daardoor ging ik er toch nog kei hard tegenaan. Ik wil mijn ouders, vriend, broertje en zusje bedanken voor het nalezen van mijn scriptie en al die stress en troep die ik al die weken veroorzaakt heb. Ik wil Linda, Laura en Nathalie, mijn kritische doch rechtvaardige lezers bedanken. En jawel, hier niet aanwezig maar mogen toch niet vergeten worden, mijn twitter en web-log volgers die me iedere dag weer bemoedigende berichtjes gestuurd hebben.
