Aan het begin van de vakantie werd mij verteld dat we ab-so-luut niet naar Rome zouden gaan. Veel te ver, veel te heet en veel te druk met mensen zoals wij, bloody tourists, zo eind juli. Maar na de zoveelste dag waarop de zon verstoppertje met ons speelde en de regen uiteindelijk met bakken uit de lucht naar beneden kwam, kwam Rome ineens ter sprake. Desperate times my dears!
Dus zaten we vrijdagochtend om acht uur met z’n alle in de auto op weg naar Rome. Nu, de reis had niet langzamer kunnen verlopen. Vijf(!) uur voordat wij voet op Romeinse grond zetten (op de terugweg deden we er slechts 2,5 uur over, ik bedoel maar..) Dus we waren pas om 13.00u in Rome. Was ik ook nog eens m’n portemonnee, vol in het zicht, op de achterbank van de auto (die op een afgelegen onbeveiligd parkeerterrein stond) vergeten en mijn vader z’n filmcamera, dus moest die arme man weer een half uur met de metro naar de parkeerplaats. Ondertussen mochten de vrouwen shoppen.
Shoppen, dat kan in Rome, mits je jezelf dat toelaat natuurlijk. Ik liet het mezelf niet toe en het wordt eigenlijk steeds makkelijker. Bij H&M hing eigenlijk alleen nog maar sale in de meest onmogelijke maten, ZARA sloeg ik voor het gemak maar over, Guess en Miss Sixty zijn niet meer zo mijn ding. Bij Celine en Prada keek ik alleen maar met grote ogen naar de etalages, alleen bij Adidas (of all places) had ik het moeilijk. Ik ben dus verliefd op de gehele collectie van Adidas by Stella McCartney. Ik wil het tennisjurkje van afgelopen zomer (wat er met 50% korting, in mijn maat nog hing) maar shit, ik heb nog steeds geen tennismaatje gevonden! Ik wil alle hardloopkleding! Ik zag zo’n mooi broekje met grijze panterprint, ik zag de mooiste schoenen (eveneens met grijze panterprint) en ik werd zelfs al warm bij het zien van SNOW BOOTS (maar dat ik het warm kreeg kan ook komen doordat het in Rome dus wel het weer was wat ik van Italië gewend ben, zinderende zomerhitte!)
Tot zover het shoppen. Toen mijn vader zich weer met onze verenigde aten we pasta in een typisch Roomeins-steegje. En na de pasta begon de tour, langs de Spaanse Trappen en de Trevi Fonteinen. Via de regeringsgebouwen naar het Colloseum en naar het Forum Romanum (het hart van het antieke Romeinse Rijk). En na de (succesvolle) zoektocht naar de lekkerste ijswinkel, wandelden we naar het Pantheon, om vervolgens langs het Piazza Navona richting het Vaticaan te lopen. Het Vaticaan hebben we natuurlijk niet gehaald, want zo lang hadden we helaas niet de tijd en het Vaticaan hebben we al meerdere keren uitvoerig bekeken, dus erg rouwig waren we niet. Na een extra zout patatje en een lekkere grote en ijskoude cola waren we klaar voor de propvolle stinkende metrorit naar het parkeerterrein. We vonden de auto, reden in extreem snel tempo terug naar La Camping en om 23.00u lag ik in mijn bedje, met de nieuwste Italiaanse Vogue en de Fashion Shows F/W 2011-2012 bijlage. Hemeltje.

Wat heb je een prachtige foto’s gemaakt! Ik vond Rome niet zo indrukwekkend als ik altijd gedacht had, vooral oud, stoffig en – toen ik er was – regenachtig en vies.
Vorig jaar november ben ik met mijn vriend vijf dagen naar Rome geweest. De mooiste stad die ik tot nu toe heb gezien. Ik was op slag verliefd. Mooie foto’s trouwens :-)

Rome is een mooie stad; maar ik vond het te toeristisch (net als Venetië trouwens)
Dan vind ik San Gimignano en dergelijke mooier.
Maar in Rome heb ik wel het duurste maar toch het lekkerste ijs ooit gegeten:
2,50 euro voor 1 bolletje ijs. Maar het was verdomd lekker.
Kokosijs dat écht naar kokos smaakte en een soort praliné-ijs met gekaramelliseerde nootjes in. Zalig!

Wel alles te voet en alles uitvoerig bekeken, maar toch.
