Ik ging met Gilles van Bacchantes Wijnimport mee naar de Wine Professional, de wijnbeurs van het jaar en tegelijkertijd de nieuwjaarsborrel voor Top Horeca Nederland. In de auto naar Amsterdam vroeg ik pas wat mijn rol die dag zou worden. Nou die was vrij simpel, (potentiële) klanten een glas wijn inschenken, kort iets over de wijn vertellen en ze aan de praat houden totdat Gilles ze kon spreken.
En zo geschiedde, van tien tot zes was dat mijn werk en ik genoot ervan. Ik voelde mijn rommelende maag amper (die ik overigens wel twee keer stilde door eventjes langs een stand met heerlijk brood te ‘lopen’), ik voelde mijn benen amper (ondanks dat m’n linkerknie toch nog niet is zoals ‘ie zou moeten zijn) en ik dacht tot een uurtje of vijf niet eens aan m’n blaas.
Tussen zes en zeven ruimde ik op, maakte Gilles ein-de-lijk zelf een rondje over de beurs en werd hem gevraagd of hij zin had om mee te gaan om ‘wat’ te eten. Nadat mij gevraagd werd of ik het erg zou vinden om mee te gaan en na mijn heftige ontkenning (en dus mijn enthousiaste instemming met het plan), kreeg ik nog iets spannends te horen, ik zou mogen rijden.
Rijden in een Citroen C4 (groot), Automaat en Frans (De D van Drive was dan ook nergens te bekennen).
Na 100 meter maakte ik natuurlijk al de geweldige vergissing door mijn rem voor mijn koppeling aan te zien, serieus, ik kon alleen maar lachen, want dat moest natuurlijk een keer gebeuren (en dan maar in een vrijwel lege parkeergarage!). Gilles had vertrouwen in mijn rijkunsten en dat stelde mij op m’n gemak.
We stonden aan de bar bij Vis aan de Schelde. Met Julius Jaspers (van oa Smartday.nl en RTL’s Topchef), Peter Lute (van oa Restaurant Lute in Ouderkerk en NET5’s Masterchef). Met de bekende culinair recensent Carsten Klint, met journalist Willem Kool (van het Willem Kool Journaal in de Telegraaf), en God met wie niet?
We aten oesters, groene curry met rivierkreeftjes, nog meer oesters en ten slotte mijn favoriet, de Steak Tartaar. Ik praatte met de heren alsof ze m’n beste vrienden waren, ook al was ik minstens twintig jaar jonger dan de jongste en ziet mijn CV er tot nu toe een stuk minder indrukwekkend uit, het gaf niet. Ik was ook wel eens stil, dan keek ik alleen maar en dat was minstens zo leuk, het is heerlijk om zo’n stelletje gepassioneerde horecamensen zo ‘normaal’ te zien.
Iedereen dronk bubbels, ik ook, die van mij waren echter met zo’n 13% minder alcohol, bubbeltjes water dus. Ja lieve lezers, er waren gister momenten dat ik baalde van m’n (was het nu brakke of dronken) uitspraak op 1 januari, dat ik deze maand geen druppel alcohol meer zou drinken, maar uiteindelijk was het waarschijnlijk for the best, ik was van mezelf al enthousiast genoeg.
Van Vis aan de Schelde vertrokken we naar Le Garage. Ik speelde voor Taxichauf, met zeven mannen in de C4 van Gilles. Ik reed, Julius was m’n rij-instructeur (en man, echt, als ‘ie ooit nog eens noodgedwongen op zoek moet naar een andere carrière moet ‘ie die van rij-instructeur zeker overwegen, het ging perfect!).
Bij Le Garage (van Joop Braakhekke) konden we gelukkig gebruik maken van Valet Parking, ik had mezelf ook nog niet in het smalle straatje zien file parkeren, dus dat kwam mij bijzonder goed uit. We dronken nog wat aan de bar en iets over tienen kon ik eindelijk (na 12 uur staan) gaan zitten. Ik at broodjes met olijfolie (uit een wel heel bijzonder (en toepasselijk) flesje), ik dronk nog meer bubbeltjes water, met citroen en toen werd er een immens groot stuk Rib Eye voor m’n neus gezet.
Over de kwaliteit van het vlees waren de chefs niet allemaal tevreden, maar ik had het geluk een ‘goed’ stuk voorgeschoteld te hebben gekregen. En ik was dan ook een van de weinigen die z’n vlees helemaal op at (waarschijnlijk heeft dit ook iets te maken met mijn fabuleuze eetlust).
Iets over twaalven had ik eindelijk mijn passagiers allebei bereid gevonden om bij mij in te stappen. Eerst reed ik van Amsterdam naar Delft, daarna mocht ik van Delft naar het wonderschone Ter Heijde aan Zee, waar ik eindelijk in m’n eigen auto mocht stappen (waarin sturen ineens een stuk minder soepel ging, die ongelooflijk klein leek en waarin ik bijna vergat te schakelen). Om half twee opende ik de deur van m’n huis, om kwart over twee sloot ik m’n ogen en droomde ik over m’n eigen journaal in een grote nationale krant, waarin ik dagelijks moet schrijven over (en dus moet komen opdraven voor) dit soort aangelegenheden.
